This week, we meet ANA member Kyla Geen, owner of EcoNaps.
Tell us about your background. What did you do in your past life, before children? Before cloth nappies!
Prior to life as a cloth nappy mumma, my passion, and love (some would call it an obsession!) for the ocean lead me to a life on World Heritage listed Lord Howe Island. Here, I had an active involvement in marine conservation, and began a career as a Scuba Dive Instructor. I lived and breathed everything to do with the ocean in my spare time – surfing, snorkelling, kitesurfing, free-diving – you name it!
Tell us about your journey into the cloth nappy industry.
My whole life I have firmly believed in the importance of living with as small a footprint on our planet as possible. So when I became pregnant with my first baby, Kobi, I made a conscious decision bringing him into this world, should be no different.
I began looking around for alternative options to disposables, and discovered Modern Cloth Nappies. It was love at first sight! However, I found I could only afford a few as they were quite expensive. Although cheaper ones were available, they seemed just that – cheap. I really struggled to find affordable cloth nappies that looked good on, and were of a decent quality.
I guess that’s when I had a bit of a lightbulb moment. I put my passion for designing and creating to good use, and before I knew it, EcoNaps Cloth Nappies were born.
How has the cloth nappy industry changed since you started your business?
There has been a huge increase in awareness of the negative impacts that disposable nappies are having on the environment. Consequently, many parents who you wouldn’t have expected to look for alternative nappy options are now choosing to use cloth. It is very rewarding to be a part of this revolution and know that I am contributing towards a better future for our children.
What is the hardest thing about running your own business?
Definitely the balancing act between being a mum and managing my own business!
Although this may often mean playing cardboard box trains while packing orders in our dispatch office, it makes it all so much more rewarding!
What’s one thing you know now that you wish you’d known when you started your business?
The dedication involved – whether it’s sneaky cloth bum photo shoots on the weekends, or midnight order checks, you literally live and breathe your business to make it all come alive!
Who helps you run your business?
My husband, soul mate and partner in crime, Matt, runs the marketing side of things, as well as most of our online development. He is a constant sounding board for my wacky ideas, and is a great support.
What do you do to relax?
Play in & on the ocean!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Don’t hold back. When you believe in something, put your heart and soul into it.
What’s something you’d like your kids to remember about you?
Being passionate about life and the experiences it gives you. Try something new everyday!
Tell us your favourite quote or saying.
‘Be the change you wish to see in the world.’ – Mahatma Gandhi
This quote has always been my life motto, and a big inspiration behind the creation of EcoNaps.
